As the name itself suggests, the buildings or homes having the design of the English alphabet ‘A’, comes under the category of ‘A ‘frame design In these types of buildings, the roofline (the sides) is steeply angled, giving the upper portion of the building, a look similar to the Alphabet. The sloped beams in the ’ A’ design houses are framed to the pitch of the roof & this provides support to the outer portion of the roof as well. While the exterior of ‘A ‘shaped houses very often has roofs, with high peaks (again the looks inspired by the letter ‘A’). It is in such buildings that the ceiling could be open to the rafters (the beams supporting the roof) above.
This design got popular in the mid of the twentieth century after the second world war (1939 – 1945). During the 1950s, the popularity of these A framed designs was at its peak. However, within fifteen to twenty years, the craze subsided. And therefore, by the end of the 1970s, the trend almost got over.
In such types of buildings, the roof generally begins from the foundation lines, or in some houses, you will see that it began at some height from the ground, say a few feet. Since the design of such types of buildings or houses is unique & requires some extra effort, you find that this is not done just randomly, but to get a beautiful view of some mountains, or beaches through large windows. So the steeply pitched ceiling & big windows are the factors that attracted people to go for these types of buildings. It was after the second world war, that Americans developed a new interest to have a new house for vacationing & other purposes like that & therefore it rose to popularity.
The construction of an ‘ A’ shaped building was not very expensive, it was also the reason, it not only attracted people but also the architect, as this gave immense opportunity to experiment with other modern design. Any building under this design can have at least two stories below the peak. Since the upper floor is a little narrow, then it will be used as bedroom space, & the lower story that is wide enough can be turned into a spacious living room. These ‘A’ framed houses & buildings are an ancient form of building, found in China, Europe & on some island of south Pacific regions.
